For new Residents, arriving in Second Life is a lot like discovering a new country. You quickly realize that you not only need to figure out how to get around, but you also need to get yourself some of the local currency and find a nice place to stay.

Finding a place to call home may not be top of the list for many new Residents, but finding an early home in Second Life is one of the reasons many avatars end up staying. It's a virtual address, a place* to begin socializing with new friends and a place to express oneself with decor and furnishings. Having a space to play, practice, and* develop a second persona can set the stage for a long and rewarding Second Life.

Unfortunately, whether talking about real life or Second Life, choosing a home can be a scary and complicated proposition, especially if it's one of the first ventures into Second Life. Is it the right place with the right neighbors? Is it close to friends or is it part of an interesting role-play community? And how on earth does one actually buy a home?

New homebuyer anxiety is especially daunting in Second Life, where the structure and rules can be non-intuitive for new and old Residents alike. We’ve learned from extensive estate feedback that helping people take their first step on the land ownership ladder is something we need to work hard on to grow the community and grow inworld businesses. The sooner we can help new users become literate about land ownership inworld, the sooner they can participate in the extensive and varied land offerings available.

So we have been working hard to ease the transition into virtual land ownership. After all, Linden Lab has a huge role to play in bringing new Residents into Second Life, and in getting them acclimatized and comfortable enough to take part in all the world has to offer.

Those new Residents soon become new friends, new group members, new inworld shoppers, new land renters, new builders and the latest content creators. Their contributions benefit the whole community.

Let's rewind a little..

Once upon a time we offered affordable parcels of land to Premium members — a program we called 'First Land'. The First Land program made land available to first-time land owners at a reduced price. First Land buyers learned about land ownership and often moved onto larger parcels. But the program was flawed in several ways. For example, not everyone can build well enough to craft their dream home and when you're new, even placing a pre-made home is tricky at best. Those First Land areas quickly became chaotic and the parcels were often bought by land dealers instead of genuine first-time buyers. For these and other reasons, the First Land program was closed in 2007.

Despite the problems, First Land was successful in giving some Residents their first taste of land ownership and we learned some valuable lessons from it. We've been thinking a lot about how to make that first step into setting up home inworld as easy as possible.

Fast forward to now..

In a few weeks we will start beta testing a new addition to the Premium subscription, to see whether we can dramatically simplify owning your first home in Second Life. We believe that, if we can make owning a home both easy and welcoming, it will increase land interest overall, leading to more consumers of both land, content and other inworld services.

This new addition to the Premium membership will be called a 'Linden Home'. This is not the same as First Land, not least because it is about providing a home rather than just land, but it does share the same goals.

During beta, a limited number of randomly selected existing Premium subscribers will be offered the chance to apply for a Linden Home. We may also offer them to a small percentage of new Premium signups but that would be later in the beta phase. There will be a number of themes and house types to choose from and, once chosen, a 512m parcel of land on a new Continent will be given to those Residents. That parcel will have a beautiful but unfurnished home already in place, and most will not share a border with other Residents.

A key aim for the beta is to provide easy entry into inworld home ownership (especially for new Residents) while not competing with estate owners. These estates do an amazing job of providing quality experiences for Residents. We want to create an on-ramp so new Resident can learn how valuable and simple owning land can be, but then move naturally on to larger parcels elsewhere.

Therefore these parcels will be unlike normal land in that they will be restricted in various ways; the house cannot be removed and the parcels cannot be sold, joined, terraformed or divided. Events and classifieds cannot be created for these parcels; only Premium Members can own them, and only one per account.

If the beta goes well, we are looking to launch this as an entitlement for all Premium subscribers early next year. When launched, Linden Homes will join the Support services, stipend and free 512m of land tier that Premium members already enjoy. As we go through the beta period you will all have a chance to visit the areas to take a look for yourselves, and we'll be talking in the blogs about what we learn from those first beta testers. Based on extensive feedback, we believe that by greatly simplifying an entry-level home-buying process, new Residents will stay longer and ultimately participate in the community and economy more extensively.

As usual, shortly after this post goes live we will open up a Discussion area so that we can get your feedback and questions. There will also be information added to the Support Wikipages and some Q&As added to the newly launched SL Answers over the next few days!

Ist ja eigentlich eine nette Sache. Aber wieder etwas mehr wo LL sich einmischt und SL zum Einheitsbrei wird. Gab es zwar schonmal mit firstland, aber da war nicht alles vorgegeben wie jetzt...
