    [VIEWER 2 TIP] Shared Media: Show YouTube on a FULL prim's face!

    Gepostet von Torley Linden am 16.03.2010 12:46:01

    'm a big fan of narrative arcs, and Shared Media has wrapped up some loose ends very neatly (with other ongoing threads, like privacy, continuing to be covered).I've been asked for YEARS: "How do I play YouTube in Second Life?" Before Shared Media, some very clever Residents devised ways to continually re-fetch the MP4 links that YouTube has made increasingly available for videos on its site. But these dynamic URLs could still be unreliable.
    Now we have Flash support with Shared Media, we can show YouTube as-is without any conversion or hosting hassles.
    BUT! Questions continue to be asked. Something I'm hearing a lot of is:
    It's cool I can show YouTube, but I ONLY want to show the video. No comments or stuff on the prim face.

    There are several methods to this, but one of the simplest is provided by YouTube itself. Normally, you'd use something like as your Shared Media URL:See where it says "watch"? Change that to "watch_popup" so the result is:You can try clicking on the two URLs in your normal web browser to compare. The second one only shows the movie.
    Or, on a YouTube page, look towards the upper right for an icon with the hover tip "Watch this video in a new window". It doesn't appear in all browsers, but that generates the same watch_popup link.
    This video of, uh, a video shows how easy it is:

    [video=youtube;<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eBQLocPEebo&hl=de_DE&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eBQLocPEebo&hl=de_DE&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eBQLocPEebo&hl=de_DE&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eBQLocPEebo&hl=de_DE&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>[/video]

    I serendipitously discovered this as I was browsing funny animal videos at work (testing Shared Media, honest). Laughter is the best medicine and I pass the tips onto you for a happier Second Life!

    Other sites may have their own means. And I'm also working on a generic "HTML jacket" to wrap Flash content and make it full-face.
    There are more advanced Flash customization features we can get into… since Shared Media is so hot, my next tip is going to be about Shared Media and data: URIs, which are a lot more exciting and useful than they sound. So tune in tomorrow! :)
